Upper Arlington, located across the Olentangy
River from The Ohio State University is the most populous suburb of
Columbus. Until the building boom of the 1980’s, it also was the
richest. It is the home of the Scioto Country Club with its
championship gold course, and houses in the neighborhood of the club
are some of the suburb’s most opulent.
This small suburb is likened to a Republican
campaign commercial, with its neighbor-next-door being The Ohio
State University. A haven for professors and college-types who stay
here, the block O banners are seen flying on football Saturdays.
You can get to downtown Columbus from Upper
Arlington in 10 or 15 minutes. Pricing of homes tends to be higher
than other areas of Columbus. Vacant lots are practically
non-existent, therefore new homes are at a premium. Most residents
tend to remodel rather than move.
Residents come from either Old Arlington south
of Lane Avenue where older homes with neat lawns line the shady
streets, or from the newer developments of ranch houses and
split-levels to the north, mostly built since the 1950’s
The city has its own police and fire
departments. The city government consists of a city manager and a
seven-member council. |
