Just east of downtown
Columbus, Bexley is known for its wide avenues of stately homes,
including the governor’s mansion. Anyone who travels east on Broad
Street passes through the heart of the old money district in
Columbus, where the grand houses of retailers, bankers and
industrialists sit on their carefully manicured lawns. From Tudor
to modern in style, many of the houses in the wealthiest part of
Bexley were built during the prosperous 1920s and still carry the
names of their original owners, such as Jeffrey, Huntington and
Lazarus.
The draw here is the
schools and city services. Along with the top-notch local school
district, Bexley offers Columbus School for Girls and St. Charles
Preparatory. Vacant lots rarely come on the market so most homes
were built before 1950.
It
has a popularly elected mayor and seven member city council and its
own police department. It contracts for fire protection from the
city of Columbus.
